Griffintown is a Montréal neighbourhood with a colourful and complicated past. A vibrant working-class district — primarily known as the heart of the Montréal Irish — it was Canada’s first industrial area, home to dockworkers, railway men, and brewery labourers who built this city with their hands.

Each Griffin Town product is named after a landmark or street from the old Irish quarter. Here’s where the names come from.
New City Gas
One of the world’s largest examples of its kind for its era, the New City Gas complex transformed coal into gas for lighting Montréal’s streets and buildings — the engine of a city being born.
The Dow Brewery
Founded by Thomas Dunn in 1790, the Dow Brewery was one of the first in Québec. Through the 20th century it merged with others under the National Brewery Co. — a cornerstone of the Irish working quarter.
Victoria Bridge
Inaugurated in 1860, Victoria Bridge was the first to cross the St. Lawrence in Montréal — built by Irish immigrant workers who flooded the neighbourhood and left their mark on every street name.
The Name
Mary Griffin’s land
Griffintown has a colourful and complicated past. Mary Griffin acquired — some say fraudulently — the lease on this land in 1654. It was eventually reclaimed in 1814, but by then Griffin’s name had stuck too deep in the cobblestones to ever come out.
When the railroad came in 1880, Griffintown became the heart of industrialisation in Canada — and with it came a massive wave of Irish working immigrants who built the railways, the breweries, and the bridges. The neighbourhood became theirs. It’s still theirs.
